Discrepancies and Disagreements in Classical Chamber Musicians’ Characterisations of a Performance

To what extent do classical chamber musicians converge in their characterisations of just happened live duo performance, and to audience members agree with the performers’ characterisations? In this study a cello-piano performed Schumann’s Phantasiestücke, Op. 73, no. 1 as part conservatory studio class which critique performances development. Immediately after, listeners players individually characterised had most struck them about first writing comments from memory then marking scores while listening recording on personal devices. They all rated (on 5-point scale) agreement by two other members. Findings demonstrate that performers can characterise performance quite differently than partner does they disagree number partner’s characterisations, corroborating previous findings case studies jazz performance. Performers’ overlap less moments strike worthy comment content listeners’ do, non-partner’s more characterisations. At same time, data show who have played piece before—though not necessarily those play kind instrument (strings vs. piano)—can be likely endorse others also before, even if make don’t each timing, or theme.
